Becoming a People of Living Water
The Church as a Hospital in a Thirsty World
- The World’s Thirst & The Church’s Call
-
- Illustration: Paramedics — they go, no matter the call. Bring people from the brink of death to a place of healing.
- Truth: Spiritually, no one can heal themselves — we all need help.
- Question: What is overflowing from us into the world? Are we a hospital?
- Scripture:
- Isaiah 61:1–3 — Jesus’ mission: to bind up the broken-hearted, proclaim freedom, comfort, and restore favour.
- John 4:10–14 — Jesus offers living water that quenches spiritual thirst forever.
- Ekklesia – The Called-Out Healers
-
- Definition: Ekklesia = “called out” to act on the will of the King.
- Point: Not a passive group, but an active community carrying out the kingdom agenda.
- Kingdom Agenda: Healing and wholeness through confronting sin and brokenness.
- Implication: The gathering of Jesus’ followers is meant to be a hospital — a spiritual emergency department.
- Jesus: The Great Physician
-
- Story: Jesus with Levi and the tax collectors.
- Scripture:
- Luke 5:31–32 — “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick… I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
- Truth: We all have heart sickness; Jesus is the surgeon.
- Application: We don’t gather out of tradition, but because we need ongoing healing.
- The Medicine: Confession & Repentance
-
- Point: These are the strongest medicines for spiritual recovery.
- Scripture: James 5:13–16 — Pray for one another, confess sins, be healed.
- Truth: Healing happens in trust-filled, vulnerable relationships — “little hospitals” like small groups.
- From Bucket to Well
-
- Story: Samaritan woman — her encounter turns her into a source of living water for others.
- Point: Once we’re healed, we become a well overflowing to others.
- Scripture: John 4:13–14 — Living water becomes a spring within, leading to eternal life.
- Application: We must be at the hospital and be the hospital.
- Grateful Patients Become Caregivers
-
- Truth: When Jesus stops the bleeding of our hope and heals our hearts, we can point others to Him.
- Gospel Anchor: He bore our wounds, died in our place, and rose to give us eternal healing.
- Challenge: Let gratitude move us to action — referring people to the only one who can heal and restore completely.
Closing Call: Be a place of hope, healing, and living water in a thirsty world — not by our power, but by the Great Physician working through us.
