Don’t Keep Agag Alive

Proverbs 21:1–3 | 1 Samuel 15

Solomon’s Warning

Solomon was not offering inspirational quotes.

He was warning future leaders.

  • Wisdom shapes how we live
  • Influence reveals who we obey
  • Power exposes what we truly trust

Solomon’s wisdom was shaped by watching Saul fail.

Not because Saul stopped believing in God—

but because he started editing Him.

Saul’s Failure (1 Samuel 15)

God gave Saul a clear command.

Saul obeyed most of it.

  • He defeated the Amalekites
  • He spared Agag (the king)
  • He kept what was valuable
  • He destroyed what was worthless

God’s response:

“He has not carried out my commands.”

📌 Partial obedience is still disobedience.

What Went Wrong?

Saul didn’t reject God — he revised Him.

He decided:

  • God went too far
  • He knew better
  • Obedience could be selective

📌 Saul was no longer a stream God could direct, but a heart God had to confront.

Obedience > Sacrifice

“To obey is better than sacrifice.”

1 Samuel 15:22

We are often willing to sacrifice:

  • Time
  • Money
  • Energy
  • Comfort

But sacrifice can become a substitute for obedience.

  • Sacrifice feels spiritual
  • Sacrifice earns applause
  • Sacrifice keeps control

Obedience costs control.

📌 Sacrifice without obedience is rebellion dressed as devotion.

Keeping Agag Alive

Saul kept Agag alive—and it came back later.

Agag’s line leads to Haman (Esther), who nearly destroyed Israel.

📌 What you don’t kill today will multiply tomorrow.

A.G.A.G — Why We Disobey

A — Approved by People

Fear of man hinders obedience.

“I feared the people and obeyed their voice.” (v.24)

📌 You don’t have a theology problem — you have an approval addiction.

G — Gains You Something

Disobedience usually benefits us.

📌 If sin didn’t give you something, you wouldn’t keep it.

A — Allows Partial Obedience

We obey just enough to feel faithful.

  • Look spiritual
  • Sound obedient
  • Avoid surrender

G — Grows If Left Alive

What is tolerated grows.

📌 The habit you ignore today will confront you tomorrow.
