Scripture
Psalm 19:7-8 (ESV)
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
Insight
Psalm 19 begins with the following statement:
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.
After a discourse on how creation reveals His glory, the Psalm then shifts to a discourse on “the law of the Lord”, God’s revelation to us through the Scriptures. The subject matter of these two distinct sections suggests that discovering God through His works may reveal His greatness but only the word of God can recover and revive a wayward heart.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
A word that is perfectly free from all corruption, perfectly filled with all good, and perfectly fitted for the end for which it is designed; will perfect the person who receives it. God’s Word will transform the life of any person who will subject themselves to it.
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
We can give credit to His word, we can rely upon His word and we can be confident His word will not deceive us. It is a sure discovery of truth, a sure direction in the way we should go and a sure foundation of lasting hope. Wise choices are built upon the assurance of His word.
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
We know that our whole being is transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2). A word that is right will restore us to our right mind when we receive and submit to it. A right mind rejoices the heart.
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
A word that is clear brings clarity to those who receive it. A word that is clean purifies those who embrace it. A word without darkness brings light. His word transforms us into His likeness because His word carries the substance of His Person.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. As I read the Scriptures I wholeheartedly receive the Person they reveal, Jesus Christ, as Lord and Saviour of my life. I surrender to Your word and ask that it will revive my soul, make me wise, rejoice my heart and enlighten my eyes. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
