First Name Basis

Exodus 3:13-15 (ESV)

Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Context – People, place and time

  1. A personal name for a personal God 
  1. A mysterious name for a boundless God 
  1. It’s not about you 
  1. The best is ahead


God’s personal name:

Self existent – he needs nothing to be – he is causeless

Rest –  in Him

All sufficient – he needs nothing to live – He is needless

Give – out of gratitude

Eternal – He is outside of space and time

Live – for forever

Unchangeable – He will not be corrupted, bribed or swayed from His mission

Trust – in His character

Present – He reveals his eternal name but in the context of time – in the context of generations

Worship – He is here

John 8:56–59 (ESV)
