How good things begin

10/12/2023 - Matthew Destry

Nativity: the place, event and occasion of someone’s birth

Judges 13:1-3

And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. There was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. And his wife was barren and had no children. And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold, you are barren and have not borne children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.

An impossible task – Answer with faith

Judges 13:23

But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these.”

Luke 1:38

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

What is your impossible task?

Judges 13:4-5a

Therefore be careful and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb…

A quiet discipline – strong banks help the river flow

Luke 1:35

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy…

Where is discipline needed in you?

Judges 13:5

…for behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”

Matthew 1:21

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

A local solution – Taking Responsibility

You see, God grows His solutions, He doesn’t import them!

How might God be growing your solutions around you, rather than you ‘importing them?’

One more question- what about prayer?

Sometimes, God works in response to us, because He is a friend.

Sometimes, God works all by Himself, because He is a King.

Galatians 4:4

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

1/ A warning against unhealthy attachment:

2/ An encouragement toward divine joy:

3/ The growing happens in secret:

Judges 13:24

And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. And the young man grew, and the Lord blessed him.

Luke 2:40

And the child (Jesus) grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.

What is God beginning in and through you in 2024?
