Romance and Relationships – The Song of 2 Hearts
We live in a world obsessed with romance, but deeply confused about love.
God does not shy away from romance, desire, or longing. He gives us a God-shaped framework for intimacy, connection, and covenant.
Solomon sets up Proverbs in chapter 1:7 like this:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”
– Here, “fear” means reverent awe, deep respect, recognition of God’s authority and holiness, and a willing submission and humility to that.
– And “knowledge” means relational, lived knowledge. Truth that has moved from your head into your life.
Then we move onto the second half of this verse:
“…but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
– “Fools” means people who are unteachable, morally stubborn, spiritually resistant.
– “Despise” here means to treat as worthless.
– “Wisdom” means the skill of living well or godliness applied to real life.
– “Instruction” means correction, discipline, and formation.
Put together, Solomon is saying:
“If you want a life that is grounded, wise, and whole, it starts here: Come before God with a heart that bows before Him, listens to Him, trusts His voice, and responds to it with obedience. Everything else grows out of that posture.
“Fools roll their eyes at, and reject the godly wisdom and correction that would ultimately mature them and make them whole.”
This is where so many relationships break down.
Not because of lack of information…
but because of resistance to formation.
God chose a song about romance to be the ‘song of all songs’ in His word because rightly ordered human love and romance is a reflection of His love for us and a powerful example to the world.
This song cuts through the noise. Romance is good. Romance is celebrated. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, maybe your relationships are not rightly ordered under God.
What is your source of contentment?
Warning in Proverbs 5:18-23
God sings over His children – His song always calls us back to our first love.
When God is rightly placed, relationships stop being places of pressure and start becoming places of service, grace, and love.
Where do we need to repent?
– Relationships are about service, not self.
– Your desire for intimacy is an echo of your need for God.
– Solomon drifted away from the wisdom God gave him, one wife at a time. Guard your heart.
God is inviting you, at the beginning of 2026, to return to your first love.
Remember when you first fell in love with God
the awe, the clarity, the tenderness.
Return to that first love.
Return to rightly ordered affection.
Return to the God who sings over you.
Because when God is first, love becomes beautiful again.
