The faith of a skeptic

31/03/2024 - Matt Destry

The evidence for, and implications of the resurrection

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

1 Corinthians 15:3-8

Are there reasonable evidences for the resurrection of Jesus in the historical documents, and if there are, what does that mean for us today?

1/ Jesus was buried

2/ The tomb was then found empty

3/ Jesus’ post mortem appearances

4/ The witness of the early church

Implications

1/ Jesus claims about himself were true – they were vindicated by his resurrection

2/ There is reason to live today – there is a bigger story

3/ If there is life after death, our lives must be shaped by the narrative of death and resurrection

4/ We have a story to tell

5/ Your life is to be lived for Christ – you are His and He loves you.
