The Rome Within Us

12/10/2025 - Zeke Murley

Key Scripture

Romans 8:35–39 (ESV)

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?… in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Context

  • Written to believers in the heart of the Roman Empire — a culture obsessed with power, conquest, and control.
  • Paul reframes the meaning of victory under a new King and a new Kingdom.
  • Rome had a gospel of domination; Jesus brings a gospel of transformation.

Supporting Scriptures

2 Corinthians 10:3 (NIV)

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.”

2 Corinthians 5:16–17 (NIV)

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Matthew 5:43–44 (NIV)

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Reflection Lines

  • Maybe conquering isn’t the goal.
  • Rome’s ideas of winning can still shape how we see faith today.
  • The Gospel doesn’t compete with the city — it transforms it.
  • True victory isn’t measured by outcomes, but by obedience.
  • Love isn’t weakness; it’s resistance against the empire within us.

Vision

Maybe this is the soil God has been waiting on — soil broken enough, ready enough, to receive again.

Romans 8 ends with this promise:

Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
