Unless the Lord Builds the House…
Matt Destry – Communications Pastor
Acts 5:38-39
“Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
After their release by he hands of angels, the apostles return to the temple courts to teach. Again (!), they are brought before the high priest. The religious authority was so upset that there was talk of killing these men. Things reach a fever-pitch when, just at that point, some wisdom enters the room. Gamaliel, an honourable teacher of the law raises his voice to present his opinion.
He argues that if the apostles efforts are under their own steam and power, they are doomed to fail. On the other hand, if these men are from God, an offensive strategy is futile! He claims that others had come before, Theudas and Judas the Galilean – without eternal result. But these men follow a risen Christ. So if these apostles are killed in the same fashion, and if they are from God, the Pharisees will be repeating the same mistake, and they would then have to deal with more resurrection press!!
We are impressed upon here regarding the motivation and behaviour of the apostles. We are told that their purpose and their actions are from God. What a testimony! Can we say that about ourselves? Are our actions and purpose from God? Or, are they a work of man? If our purpose and activity is from God, we can trust him no matter the outcome. We can follow him without fear of ultimate failure. Even if we are killed, the movement will continue. God will be victorious.
We can trust His resurrection power. When we act and live in the power and purpose of God, there can be none that will stop it. God’s purpose is eternal, and his ways are amazing. We can entrust ourselves to Him no matter whether we go to the prison or the palace. His purse will prevail, and our job is to imitate and follow Him.
