A Life Transformed

Matt Destry – Communications Pastor

Acts 9:21

All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on his name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”

Have you ever walked away from a conversation with someone and thought, “Wow, they’ve changed a lot”? Maybe they had been to a conference, started a new relationship, got a new job. Perhaps it wasn’t a change for the better. Maybe they’d been through some challenges or a test of faith. Whatever it was, there is always a catalyst to life transformation. The greatest catalyst that brings about the biggest changes in someone’s life is the grace and love of Jesus. In today’s passage we are confronted with the extent of the life transformation in the person of Saul, and how that brings hope to the world we live in.

After being knocked from his horse, blinded, led to a house where a man named Ananias prayed for him, Saul was completely changed. Literal scales fell from his eyes, and also from his heart as he realised the truth about Jesus. Saul was baptised, and immediately began to preach on his experience, and proclaiming that Jesus is indeed the son of God! This is a remarkable and miraculous transformation from the murderous Pharisee we were introduced to only chapters earlier.

It’s no wonder the disciples in Damascus had a hard time believing it was the same man! They had surely thought it was some kind of joke, that the man who was arresting followers of Jesus was now in the synagogues, proclaiming the reality of the same God he was trying to destroy. This should fill our hearts with hope, because if God can do this once, he can most certainly do it again. Life transformation is found in the love and grace of Jesus. Power and his mercy revealed to us through his death and resurrection. He is the ultimate catalyst for change ! If you want to make changes in your life – don’t look within – look to Him. He is the one who makes all things new.

Reflective Questions

1/ What’s the biggest change that has happened to you since you started following Jesus?
2/ What have others said about your changed life?
3/ How can you encourage others to be transformed by God’s love?
