Welcome Home – 40 Day Fast Devotional #8
Give What You Have
Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
Life in current times is quite demanding. We experience this in many ways – demands at work, home and in social settings. With so much pressure on our time and energy, it doesn’t take long, if rest is not taken, to feel worn out and tired. The way to navigate this is not to withdraw or become selfish. It is simply to give what you have.
Peter and John knew what they could give, and what they couldn’t. As the begging man sat at the temple gate asking for money, the disciples give him something that he did not ask for; something so much richer than the coins he was expecting.
As followers of Jesus we must know what we possess. We must realise that our money, time and energy are all finite things, but that the Spirit of God can be given without measure! We have been given access to the one thing that everybody needs. Jesus said “if you drink this water, you will never be thirsty again” (John 4).
As believers in Jesus, what we have in our spirit is greater than what we have in our wallet. Imagine if before we rushed to solve physical needs, we first looked at the heart issues? Allow the Spirit of God to work through you, to bring life and love to those around you.
- Location is important. Why was the lame man sitting outside the temple?
- Think about the Gospels: when Jesus sent out the 12 (and the 72), what did he ask of them. What similarities do you see here?
- How can you allow the life of God in you to further flow into the lives of people around you?
